Samsung C&T, Ssangyong E&C, SK E&C Win Overseas Awards for Outstanding Construction and Safety Management

2020-02-05

Korean contractors are receiving growing recognition for their advanced technology-based expertise in diverse areas, particularly in construction capability and safety management. On February 5, the Construction Association of Korea announced a list of contractors that won awards from foreign governments and clients during the previous year.

Samsung C&T, for instance, received an array of diverse awards from six countries, including Singapore, the United States and India. In Singapore, at the Annual SHE Award Convention (ASAC) 2019, hosted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the company received a Safety & Health Certificate of Excellence and an Accident-Free Recognition Award. In India and the United States, the company also won several grand prizes in the category of construction safety. Moreover, in Algeria, China and Indonesia, the firm received appreciation plaques from clients for outstanding on-site management.

Ssangyong E&C, on the other hand, won four awards in the construction and safety management categories in Singapore, the company’s main overseas market, also known for its tough construction-related regulations. In particular, among all Korean contractors, Ssangyong E&C was the only winner of a Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) Award, supported by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), thereby receiving recognition for its outstanding safety management capability in civil engineering and construction.

SK E&C was another company recognized in Singapore for its quality construction and project management. The company received a Safety & Environmental Excellence Award at the Land Transport Excellence Awards 2019, hosted by the LTA. Samsung Engineering followed suit by being honored with a MEED Projects Award, supported by the Middle East Economic Digest (MEED), a representative construction magazine.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction also received a certificate of appreciation from the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN), a state-owned electricity utility in Vietnam, in recognition of the successful completion of a project which finished three months earlier than the proposed date.

“Amid fierce competition with local and international companies, Korean contractors have been honored with awards in essential construction categories from major governments and organizations, in recognition of their technological prowess as well as expertise and superb performance in construction management,” an official from the International Contractors Association of Korea said. “This award-winning streak will raise the overall status of Korea’s overseas construction business, thereby significantly improving the odds of Korean contractors winning construction tenders and entering overseas markets.”
