‘Famous for Overseas Construction’ with 132 orders over the past 33 years

Since the foundation of the company, SSangyong Engineering & Construction (Chairman & CEO: Kim, S. Joon) has enjoyed a strong reputation for overseas construction and has recorded significant orders totaling about US$ 7.8 billion, with 132 construction projects in 19 countries, including advanced countries like the US and Japan, Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Indonesia, and the Middle East.

This year, Ssangyong E&C plans to strengthen its value engineering (VE) so as to further achieve maximal effect with minimal cost in a short period of time. Thus, it will be able to dominate the advanced construction area, while also occupying the blue ocean of the industry with high-value added construction, such as the difficult civil engineering work for SOC, since orders are expected to increase.

■ Number one in construction for overseas construction of top-class structures - Ssangyong E&C

Since Ssangyong E&C first entered into Singapore in 1980, it has successfully constructed Singapore’s symbol Raffles City as well as the 73-floor Swissotel The Stamford Hotel, which was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s tallest hotel. Currently, Ssangyong E&C is building the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which is Singapore’s first casino integrated resort and the single largest overseas construction project ever undertaken by a Korean construction company.

Additionally, Ssangyong E&C has built a Hyatt affiliated hotels and Intercontinental Hotels, which are symbolic of luxury in the hotel trade, in world-famous tourist destinations such as Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Guam, Dubai and Bali. It has successfully constructed many top-class hotel chains, including the construction of a high-end luxury ‘W Singapore - Sentosa Cove Hotel’ affiliate, which first entered Singapore in 2009.

At the end of the 1980s, Ssangyong E&C successfully carried out seven development projects consecutively in the US alone by handling the whole process from planning, designing and constructing the US’ Anaheim Marriott Hotel project, which was the first overseas investment development project in the Republic of Korea. At the end of the 1990s, Ssangyong E&C made inroads into Dubai, when the name was still unfamiliar to Koreans, and successfully built the Jumeirah Emirates Tower Hotel and the Dubai Grand Hyatt Hotel, which are two of the top three hotels in Dubai. Thus, the company provided other Korean construction companies following in its wake with the opportunity to tap into the Dubai market.

On the list of the most successful global construction companies announced annually by the US ENR, which is a world-famous construction magazine, Ssangyong E&C ranked second in the world in the hotel section in 1998. Since then, it has continued to maintain this lofty ranking by achieving world-renowned construction results for about 13,000 top-class hotel rooms and hospitals with more than 8,000 beds.
