2008-09-22

The Company received the Grand Prize, the 2008 Korean Architecture Award (KAA) in the public sector for the Cho Man-shik Memorial & Westminster Hall it built in Soongshil University (Project Manager: Lee Yoon-gi) in a ceremony held at the KIRA Building in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul on September 22.

Launched by the Ministry of Construction in 1992, the annual prize-awarding event is co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the Korea Institute of Registered Architects, and The Seoul Economic Daily and co-sponsored by the Korea Housing Guarantee Corporation, the Construction Association of Korea, the Korea Housing Association, and the Korea Housing Builders Association.

The prize-winning lecture building is spoken highly of for its beautiful appearance, with links of the glass façade panels hidden inside using high-end techniques and sealing material. The wood-finished tiered lecture hall maximizes the use of natural surroundings, i.e. the hillside of Mt. Seodal behind the school. Its roof, made of gray zinc panels creates a magnificent feel through the maximization of the shadow effect obtained from the height of rectangular objects.

The lecture building is linked to the existing student welfare facilities with a bridge for users’ convenience. It also provides a 276-space parking lot in basements-I and II.

During the screening process, judges spoke highly of the esthetic quality, usefulness and harmony with the surroundings of the building.

With this award, the Company has won the prize for a total of 15 years and for the past two consecutive years. In 2007, it won the prize for its work for the campus building in Seokgwan-dong, Seoul of the Korea National University of Arts.
