SsangYong E&C won a port reconstruction project in Karachi, Pakistan

SsangYong E&C won a project worth 92.8M USD to reconstruct Karachi Port, the biggest port in Pakistan.
SsangYong E&C won the new project, while nearing its completion of berths 10 to 14 at Karachi Port.
The company is taking a lead in the Southwest Asian SoC market.

SsangYong E&C (Chairman & CEO Kim,S.Joon) announced that the company won a project worth 92.8M USD to reconstruct berths 15, 16, 17, and 17A at the East Wharves of Karachi Port, the biggest port in Pakistan.
With the loan offered by the World Bank, the Karachi Port Trust placed an order for the project and offered favorable terms where the company receives 15% of the construction cost in advance.
SsangYong E&C is nearing its completion of berths 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 at Karachi Port, and by winning the project to reconstruct berths 15, 16, 17, and 17A, the company expects to create synergy between the two projects. Construction is expected to take 30 months after initial groundbreaking.
A SsangYong E&C official said, “Even though we were not the lowest bidder, we were awarded with the project as we fully proved our construction capability to the Pakistani authorities building berths 10 to 14. Also, we can utilize the workforce and the equipment used in the construction of berths 10 to 14, which are to be completed by April.”
The city of Karachi is located in the southern part of Pakistan near the Arabian Sea. It is the biggest city in Pakistan with 13 million people. Karachi Port is the biggest port in Pakistan and can handle up to 1.17 million TEU a year.
Pakistan is a country with 160 million people and its land is 8 times larger than that of Korea. With the help of international financial aid, Pakistan is focusing on high-profile SoC projects and has much growth potential along with its neighboring country, India.
In 2007, SsangYong E&C won a project worth 90M USD to reconstruct berths 10 to 14 at Karachi Port and the construction will be completed by April, 2012. In addition, the company is building the 180km-long North-South Corridor Expressway in India, being the most notable business among Korean companies in the Southwest Asian SoC market.
