Ssangyong E&C Achieved the Goal

2010-07-21

Ssangyong E&C recently announced that it achieved the goal of 12 million accident free hours on the ground for the project for Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which drew a lot of attention from the world because the building inclined at 52 degrees at its highest point.

It was not easy to accomplish the zero accident goal over such a long construction period of 12 million hours in Singapore. Further, the Singapore government has very strict regulations on construction site accidents that if a construction worker is hospitalized for 24 hours or receives medical treatment for more than three days, the case will immediately be reported to the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM), and the construction company receives penalty points, and if the penalty points are higher than standard points, the company is not allowed to increase the number of its workers on the ground for a period of time.

Ssangyong E&C won the bid for the project, beating other world-class construction companies in 2007, because it proposed the cutting-edge technologies of construction, which can realize the design plan of the inclining hotel, and the method of shortening the construction period.

In particular, the project was considered one of the most difficult construction projects among existing buildings or building projects under construction, but Ssangyong E&C successfully completed the project and held the topping out ceremony of the hotel last July, after finishing the framework of the building within 18 months without any accident happenings on the ground while constructing one floor within three to four days under the two-shift system running 24-hours.

A Ssangyong E&C official said, “our company has received special offers from other construction research institutes because it has many experiences about high-tech construction projects such as Marina Bay Sands Hotel,” “and our high-tech construction skills and know-hows on safety on construction sites will help enhance the competitiveness of Korean technology.“

Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands Hotel was completed in June, 2010, which was the main part of the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort Project implemented as a national construction project by the Singapore government. In addition, the project was the biggest overseas construction in the history of Korea, and the construction cost of the project amounted to 686 million dollars.
