Ssangyong E&C sets a record for concrete casting

2012-11-13

Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. (CEO & Chairman S. Joon Kim) recently announced that it had successfully placed concrete in casts within a 41 hour period on the Marina Bay Highway construction site, a record in the civil engineering history of Singapore.

To build a roof slab for the underground highway, 1,814 mixer and 10,881㎥ concrete trucks were used over 41 hours from 9 p.m. Friday, November 2 until 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4. As a result, a 54m×80m by 2.2 to 2.7m thick roof slab was built. It is equivalent to the construction completion of a 144 story building structure accommodating 34 pyong-sized apartments in only two days.

Ssangyong E&C, which had already set the world record in 1981 for its concrete casting within 48 hours on the Raffles City Complex construction site, made thorough preparations such as monitoring weather statistics in order to choose a day with the lowest possibility of rain given the fact that Singapore has frequent squalls. Although there was more than 30mm of heavy rain, Ssangyong E&C successfully completed the mission by using protection tents and a number of drainage pumps.

Ssangyong E&C took the order for the project to the value of 820 billion won in 2008. The project was about building a total 1 km, 10-lane highway, including an underground road of 0.67 km, and underground ramps of 0.33 km. Its construction costs are as much as 820 million won per meter because it requires state-of-the art technologies especially for underground space for landfill. The project also sets another record for safe construction of 9 million hours as of October 28, which is very rare for large-scale civil engineering sites. It is expected to be completed in June 2013.
