Ssangyong E&C Awarded the Certificate of Excellence at the Annual Safety Awards Convention of 2012 Singapore!

2012-10-08

Top honors went to Ssangyong E&C's expressway and subway construction sites in Singapore.
Ssangyong E&C was awarded two construction site prizes, which is the first case ever in history.
Ssangyong E&C continues a zero rate industrial accident rate with the Singapore downtown subway construction site. This zero rate is the longest in the subway construction history of Singapore.

Ssangyong E&C (Chairman S. Joon Kim) has been recognized as one of the most competitive construction corporations in safety management as well as in construction.

Ssangyong E&C said that the corporation was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for both Zone 482 at the Marina Coastal Expressway and Zone 921 at the Downtown Line Phase 2 at the Annual Safety Awards Convention 2012 that was held in Singapore.

Ssangyong E&C is the only construction corporation that has earned the top award for two sites since the establishment of the Annual Safety Awards Convention in 1999.

The Annual Safety Awards Convention has been designed to assess the performance of all expressway and subway site construction orders issued by the LTA, or Land Transport Authority, under the Singapore Central Government. Four construction sites won awards this year among as many as 100 competing sites.

Ssangyong E&C won the construction contract for the Marina Coastal Expressway in 2008. This ten-lane expressway was constructed underground with a total length of 1 kilometer and as much as 820 billion Korean Won of the budget has been invested in this expressway project.

Ssangyong E&C continues a zero rate accident performance rate for as much as 8.50 million hours despite harsh field conditions where extensively wide ground had to be reinforced, piling and scaffolding had been processed, and as many as 1,000 construction workers were daily on the construction site.

Ssangyong E&C earned the contract for the downtown subway construction in 2009. The corporation built about a 1 kilometer long subway and 2 stations. A total of 700 billion Korean Won had been earmarked by the Singapore Government for this project.

All subway construction methods such as NATM (New Australian Tunneling Method), TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), and Open Cut have been applied to these subway construction sites. The Singapore Government has officially requested that Ssangyong E&C not block any lanes or disturb the flow of traffic until the construction comes to an end. Following the Singapore Government request strictly, Ssangyong E&C has transferred roads and canals as many as 50 times so far and has not caused any traffic disturbance.

Construction site and field conditions are unfavorable. Many commercial districts with highly floating populations and residential areas have been around construction zones. Ssangyong E&C still works on the ten-lane expressway that is usually crowded with cars and is 25 meters deep under the canal. Despite these unfavorable field conditions, Ssangyong E&C still successfully continues a zero rate of industrial accidents over an astronomical 7 million hours, which is the longest zero accident rate in the history of Singapore subway constructions.

A staff member at Ssangyong E&C talked about these noticeable accomplishments, saying, "We earned prizes at each of the two construction sites. Thus, we came to possess a total of 18 safety and health-related awards presented by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents of England, and the Labor Administration and the Public Health Administration of Singapore. Additionally, since starting in 2010, we have won the Certificate of Excellence for expressway construction sites for three years in a row. Our performance is unbelievable"

Ssangyong E&C successfully completed the construction of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in 2010, which has become a new icon of Singapore. Ssangyong E&C proudly achieved a zero rate for accident free performance over 12 million hours until the construction of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel had ended.
