Ssangyong E & C (Representative Director: Kim Suk-joon) is holding an exhibition of students’ work submitted to the second annual Building Remodeling Design Contest sponsored by Ssangyong, the only contest of the kind in Korea, at the COEX building in Samseong-dong, Seoul, from September 30 through October 3.

A total of 1,104 students, either individuals or teams, submitted their remodeling design pieces to the contest held on the theme of A New Discovery of Urban Architectures through Remodeling.

The Grand Prize was awarded to Lee Sang-min, a senior architecture major at Kookmin University, who submitted a remodeling design for a Shindongah Apartment. His work piece features step-shaped buildings with a terrace on the roof surface. The Gold Prize was awarded to Kim Young-hwan at Kyungil University and Kim Gyung-min at Hongik University. They submitted remodeling designs for Taepyung-Life Arcade Apartment and Nakwon Arcade, respectively.

The submitted works were judged by seven experts, including Professors Kim Jin-gyun (Seoul National Univ.), Lee Sang-ho (Yonsei Univ.), and Mr. Choi Jang-shik, Head of the Architectural Engineering Division of Ssangyong E & C. A total of thirty-seven prize winners were selected. Prizes include: ▲ Grand Prize (5 million won) for a team, ▲ Gold Prize (2 million won) for two teams, ▲ Silver Prize (1 million won) for four teams, ▲ Bronze Prize (300,000 won) for 30 teams. The winners of the Grand Prize and the Gold Prize and the professors who worked with them will be given an opportunity to visit world-famous architectures. Silver Prize winners or higher will be given an advantage in applying for a position at Ssangyong E & C, if they wish.

A Ssangyong official said, “The event is designed to encourage architecture majors to come up with fresh ideas concerning building remodeling whose market is growing rapidly. This year, a wide variety of designs were submitted, ranging from those focusing on improvement of the functions of existing buildings to those attempting to change the overall urban environment.”

On September 30, the first day of the aforesaid exhibition, the Award Ceremony will be held, followed by a special seminar sponsored by the Korea Remodeling Association on the nation’s policy concerning building remodeling.

Ssangyong E & C launched the Remodeling Team in 2000 ahead of others in the industry to meet the prevalent trend in the market. It is currently engaged in remodeling work for a total of 1,424 households in four apartment complexes, including Gungjeon APT (the first apartment complex remodeled in Korea) in Bangbae-dong and Dongshin APT in Dogok-dong.
