2017-07-10

[Gun Heo, YTN Infomax] SEOUL, South Korea - Ssangyong E&C, celebrating its 40 year anniversary this year, continues its 3-year strong recruitment streak. This is intended to replenish the firm ranks, which had previously been reduced drastically during its restructuring phase. Questions abound as to whether the firm will be able to restore its former glory as a construction powerhouse.

According to Ssangyong E&C on October 10, the firm will be ing about 30 new hires by the end of this month. It has already hired 25 career employees this year, and the total number of hires this year is expected to reach 100.

Ssangyong E&C has been hiring new employees for three consecutive years since it was acquired by Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) in January 2015. The firm recruited 106 employees in 2015, the first year of the acquisition. While the number of hires last year ped to 43, the number increased to more than 100 this year.

This is because demand for manpower has increased sharply after the acquisition by ICD.

New orders exceeded 1 trillion KRW for the two consecutive years, reaching 1.9 trillion KRW and 1.4 trillion KRW respectively in 2015 and last year. The balance of construction contracts, which was 1.7 trillion KRW at the end of 2014, increased to 2.5 trillion KRW as of the end of March. In the domestic redevelopment and reconstruction and remodeling fields, the firm also won orders worth approximately 850 billion KRW.

Based on these achievements, Ssangyong E&C's annual orders and sales targets were set to 3.2 trillion KRW and 1.3 trillion KRW respectively, an increase of 77% and 53% over the last year. Thus, it is natural to understand this year recruitment drive as a signal towards Ssangyong E&C&rsquos quest to restore its prestige.

Ssangyong E&C, which had a reputation as an international construction powerhouse, with multiple landmark projects in places like Singapore, underwent massive restructuring due to capital erosion and suffered the loss of manpower.

230 employees left the firm in 2013 with the beginning of the workout, and 309 left the following year. No new open hires were made then.

The number of full-time employees, once reaching 1,613 in 2012, decreased to 1100 after the corporate rehabilitation process. In particular, the number of technicians in possession of construction capability evaluation skills reduced drastically during the workout process, with the number of 907 in 2012 ping to 562 in late 2015.

While large-scale recruitment is taking place to meet the demand for human resources, whether the firm will be able to meet the demand for technical manpower remains to be seen.

A source from the Ssangyong E&C said, "although the number of engineers has decreased a lot in terms of numbers, there is little concern about the technology gap. We are working hard to improve the training programs for new employees at domestic and overseas sites to cultivate talent that combines technical acumen with language skills."
