Buildings, Hotels, and Subways: 'The king of Singapore'&hellipwith new record-breaking safety records
Architecture&Construction market in Singapore is one of the most cut-throat one, with numerous global firms competing against each other. The government of Singapore prioritizes creative architecture, and reasonable cost, but not the lowest one. So, in Singaporean Construction bidding market, creativity and the technology takes the lead. SsangYong Engineering & Constructions has takenan unrivaled position on this market. Not only in big building and hotel projects, but also in road, port, and subway projects, the company has achieved an unmatched recognition for construction capabilities. In DTL (Downtown Line) 921 site, across the center of the Singapore city, SsangYong is now rewriting the history of the subway.

In DTL 921 site, since the groundbreaking in June 2009, there was no single accident happened on the site for 6 years and 1 month (73 months), and the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a 15 million man-hour zero hazard certificates. No other firms had accomplished this feat before in subway construction project. Assuming 100 workers works 8 hours a day, 16 million man-hours with zero hazards means that there should be no accident happened for 55 years, or 20 thousand days straight. For May 2016, the site has logged 16.7 million man-hour / zero hazard record.

ASsangYong insider said that "the previous record in subway was 7 million man-hour, due to notoriously thorough construction inspection in Singapore", and "it is an unmatched feat, especially given that the urban subway construction project is one of the most difficult projects to do."

SsangYong received this DTL 921 site for 700 trillion KRW in 2009, the largest part in 10 of Singapore's "DTL Phase 2". Won by the Design & Build method, it is the largest railway / subway project ever won by Korean firm in past 40 years of overseas projects.

In a word, DTL 921 site is difficult one. The site, connecting Bugis and Little India, the center of the Singapore City, which will house total 1065m of subway rail and 2 stations, there are busy streets, 25m-wide Rochor Canal. And under the ground, there are existing North-East lines, just 5m over the new line.

Also, in the soft ground under the site, the 167m-long box-shaped tunnel structures have to be built in advance to accommodate 10-lane-wide underground passageway. Even though the total length is about a kilometer, the firm had to apply every single subway construction techniques, and had to move the ground 10-land roads over 50 times not to interfere with ground traffic. Because of the condition, the firm had surprised everyone when it won the project for 700 billion KRW, including the technological costs, almost 700 million KRW for a meter.

Based on the technical skills, SsangYong had applied every single construction techniques in a single lag, and proposed a solution to permanently move the canal, which was directly crossing the site, to the north. Even though SsangYong had to up the cost by a 100 million USD, the firm won the contract.

Over other global big players, DTL 921 site had received totaling 13 safety awards, including the 'Champion' of the Safety Award supervised by Singapore LTA in 2013. SsangYong is the unmatched king in Singapore. Executing 37 projects, including Singapore National Stadium, Remodeling project for the Raffles Hotel, the national treasure of the Singapore, NEW.K.K Hospital, where over 35% of the Singaporeans were born, and Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the miracle of the 21th century architecture, SsangYong became the best construction firm in Singapore.

One of the SsangYong Insider said that "After we set foot in here in 1980, we had built most of the landmarks of Singapore, competing with other foreign firms", and "we succeeded because we maintained the trust with the client, and had the high-quality construction capabilities."
