SsangYong E&C Triumphs with Completion of T308 Site on Singapore’s TEL!

2024-06-25

Ssangyong Engineering & Construction (Ssangyong E&C), part of the Global Sae-A Group and a leader in its field, has once again demonstrated its exceptional capabilities and burnished its reputation in subway engineering with the successful completion of a second urban subway project in Singapore.

On June 24th, the Ssangyong E&C consortium announced a successful conclusion to its T308 site project on Singapore’s Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). The line had opened in its entirety a day previous and is a second landmark achievement for the firm, alongside its "Urban Subway DTL921 Site" project of March 2016, considered one of the most challenging subway line constructions ever undertaken in Singapore.

The Thomson-East Coast Line is one of six MRT routes across the city and connects Changi International Airport to its center. For the 13 km-long undertaking, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded contracts to both local and international construction firms, dividing the project into 13 sections, encompassing 10 stations. Korean firms, Ssangyong E&C, Hyundai E&C, Samsung C&T, and GS E&C were all participants.

Awarded in January 2016 to a joint venture of Ssangyong E&C and Hyundai E&C, the contract for the construction of the T308 site was worth approximately KRW340 billion, with stakes of 75% and 25%, respectively. Work on this particular section involved the construction of the Marine Terrace MRT Station, incorporating a 1.78km underground connecting passage and a 1.34 km parallel tunnel, requiring the use of cutting-edge TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) methods.

Located in a densely populated area, work on this section was complicated by the presence of numerous residential, public office, and school buildings, all flanking a six-lane road. Furthermore, a soft reclamation layer made ground conditions challenging, necessitating precise deployment of construction technology overseen by rigorous project management.

Across an eight-year lifespan, the project achieved an exemplary safety record with zero accidents. Ssangyong E&C was honored with ten awards from four local institutions, including the LTA of Singapore, for its achievements in safety, health, and construction environment.

A company spokesperson said, “Since our initial venture into Singapore in 1980, we have consistently showcased our technological excellence and superior safety management in both high-end construction and civil engineering. We remain committed to maintaining these high standards during our ongoing civil engineering works for two sites of Singapore’s urban underground expressway.”

Ssangyong E&C has undertaken approximately 40 projects in Singapore since its inception and entry into the market in 1980, going on to showcase the very best of Korean construction technology. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel stands as its landmark achievement, symbolizing the company’s monumental contribution to large-scale construction projects in Singapore.
