‘A miracle of architecture in the 21st Century’ with a maximum 52-degree incination, the Marina Bay Sands hotel joins the global village’s club of city landmarks; along with the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Tower Bridge in London, the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Opera House in Sydney.

The Hotel, which has the reputation of being one of the most demanding projects to have ever been undertaken, has finally revealed its grand figure thanks to Ssangyong E&C’s technology in only two years after initiating its construction.

On June 23rd, the world turned their eyes on the Opening Celebration event for Marina Bay Sands integrated resort in Singapore.

The highlight of this event was, undoubtedly, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel that had been the talk of the town ever since the project was in motion.

This hotel has been designed to symbolize the gateway of Singapore, and it had attracted lots of attention from the very outset of its construction due to its challenging design where all three towers’ structure was drawn in the image of the Chinese character ‘入’; which means ‘enter a place’. Equally, the eastern tower, which is sloped up to a maximum of 52 degrees, has a 70-meter high(23-story) connecting section to the western building before being extended to 55-story.
To maintain the gradient of the eastern building (at an angel of about ten times that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, i.e., 5.5°). Ssangyong E&C applied the post-tension construction method the build a bridge connection to the western building in March, 2009.

Additionally, topping off the construction at a pace of one floor every four days allowed the structural work to be completed within 18 months(July, 2009). Which was more than one month earlier than scheduled.
Following the structural work, the finishing work of a total of 2,561 guest rooms and the erecting of the Sands SkyPark® was to be the following projects to be completed.
The SkyPark is 343-meterwide and twice the size of a soccer field(12,408m2) and connects the 56th and 57th floors of three buildings of the hotel.

The SkyPark includes an infinity edge swimming pool, a public observation deck, garden, a trail and restaurants.

The entire amount of iron bars used in this project weighed 43,000 tons, which is comparable to sustain the project for 30 apartments in the 50-story apartment complexes. The total length of the iron bars used amounts to 27,232km, which is twice the diameter of planet Earth, Furthermore, 195,000m2 of concrete (sufficient to fill up 78 Olympic swimming pools)were used.

A record was set for zero accidents in the frame of 10 million hours even though the project was carried out on a 24-hour basis by multi-national workers with different languages, customs and lifestyles working in two shifts.

Ssangyong E&C emphasized that “Even before its completion, our project was talked about as being the new symbolic landmark of Singapore that will capture the eyes of tourists. This hotel is a mammoth building with a gross floor area of about twice that of the 63-story building in Korea. The appropriate construction period was 48 months, but it was successfully done in only 27 months to demonstrate Korea’s construction capability internationally.”

Meanwhile, this hotel is the main project of Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, seen as the driver of tourism in Singapore. Ssangyong E&C won the project tender in 2007.
