May 23rd is the grand opening of Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands Hotel, constructed by Ssangyong E&C.
A miracle of the modern architecture in the 21st century with a maximum 52-degree inclination…showing off the technology of ‘Korean construction’.
A total of 2,511 guest rooms…also the SkyPark at twice the size of a soccer field constructed at a height of 200 m draws attention.

‘A miracle of architecture in the 21st century ’ with a maximum 52-degree inclination.
Another landmark in the global village that represents a city has been added, including the Statue of Liberty (New York), the Eiffel Tower (Paris), Tower Bridge (London), and the Opera House (Sydney).
Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which has a reputation as the most demanding project to have ever been designed and constructed, has finally revealed its grand figure with our technology in only two years after its construction.

On the 23rd, the grand opening ceremony of the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort was attended by many relevant people and local influential figures, including the construction company of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel Kim, S.Joon Chairman&CEO of Ssangyong E&C Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore Sheldon Adelson, CEO of the supervising company, the US’s world-class development company for casinos, hotels and resorts, the Sands Group Joung Keun Kim, the Ambassador of Singapore to the Republic of Korea and Edmund Cheng, CEO of Wing Tai Group.

Especially, it attracted a high-profile globalattention with 1,200 reporters from round the world participating so as to report the event.

This hotel has been designed to symbolize the gateway of Singapore, and it had attracted lots of attention from the very outset of its construction due to its difficult design where each of three buildings were in the structure of the Chinese character ‘入’ and the eastern building, which is sloped at a maximum of 52 degrees, has a 70-meter high (23-story) connecting section to the western building before being extended to 55-story.

To maintain the gradient of the eastern building (at an angle of about ten times that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, i.e., 5.5˚), Ssangyong E&C applied the post-tension construction method to build a bridge connection to the western building in March, 2009.

Additionally, topping off the construction at a pace of one floor every three to four days allows the structural work to be completed in 18 months (July, 2009), which was more than one month earlier than scheduled.

Following the structural work, the finishing work of a total of 2,561 guest rooms and the establishment of the SkyPark had to be the following project to be completed. SkyPark is 343-meterwide and twice the size of a soccer field (12,408㎡) and connects the 56th and 57th floors of three buildings of the hotel.

The SkyPark, including three swimming pools, an observatory, garden, trail, restaurant and spa, prides itself as the world’s largest observatory that can accommodate up to 900 people at once. This is located on the 70-meter protrusion (the whole length of a Boeing 747 airplane) which sticks out in unique structure without any support.

The entire amount of iron bars used in this project weighed 43,000 tons, which is comparable to sustain the project for XX apartments in the XX-story apartment complexes. The total length of the iron bars used amounts to 27,232 km, which is twice the diameter of the planet earth. Furthermore, 195,000㎥ of concrete (sufficient to fill up 78 swimming pools that satisfy the Olympic standards, which is., 2,500㎥) were used.

A maximum of 6,000 workers joined the project on a daily basis. This included people from nine countries including the US, Britain, China, Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. A record was set for zero accidents in the space of 10 million hours even though the project was carried out a 24-hour basis by multi-national workers with different languages, customs and lifestyles working in two shifts.

Ssangyong E&C emphasized that “Even before its completion, our project was talked about as being the new symbolic landmark of Singapore that will capture the eyes of tourists. This hotel is a mammoth building with a total floor area of about twice that of the 63 building in Korea. The appropriate construction period was 48 months, but it was successfully done in only 27 months to demonstrate Korea’s construction capability internationally.”

Meanwhile, this hotel is the main project of Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort, which is an urban-type integrated resort, implemented as a national project of Singapore to provide a growth engine of the next generation. Ssangyong E&C won the project bid in 2007, which was the largest single overseas project to be undertaken by a Korean construction company with the construction amount to be at SGD 1.1 billion.
