On October 23, Ssangyong received the Brunel Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) of the U.K. for its work building the Express Bus Terminal Station, Seoul Subway Line 9.
The Brunel Medal was established in 1981 by the Society of Civil Engineering Technicians (SCET) to recognize individuals or organizations that achieved a remarkable feat in civil engineering. The medal is now awarded by the ICE, following the integration between the SCET and the ICE.
‘Isambard Kingdom Brunel', who is inscribed in Brunel medal is a British civil and shipbuilding engineer, also referred to as a genius at engineering. The Thames tunnel, which is a underwater built under the Thames river by him is still being used as a part of London's subway system. Brunel ranked second place, next to Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, the British prime minister according to survey on '100 Greatest Britons' conducted by British network BBC in 2002.
Seoul Subway Line 9 has an express bus terminal and a hotel on the ground level, and an old underground mall and the track of Subway Line-3 installed only 15cm above its ceiling. The station is spoken of highly as an immaculate example of a large arch-shaped structure, with T.R.c.M. and C.A.M. techniques applied, the first of its kind in the world.
Known as the most difficult section among various subway sites within the country, the site received compliments from 40-plus experts from France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Japan who visited the site while attending a symposium of the International Tunneling Association held in Seoul in 2006. It has also become a favored destination of experts.
Earlier this year, the station was ed as a beautiful station by the Urban Infrastructure Facility Headquarters of the City of Seoul, as well as the Civil Engineering Structure of the Year by the Korean Society of Civil Engineers. Thus, Ssangyong Engineering & Construction has had its sheer technological prowess recognized worldwide.
