CEO Kim S.Joon Visits Marafiq Desalination Plant Construction Site in Jubail

2009-06-30

Ssangyong E&C’s Chairman&CEO Kim S.Joon visited the Marafiq Desalination Plant site in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, on June 29th and 30th. On his first day in Jubail, Kim discussed Ssangyong’s advance into the Saudi Arabian construction market with Abdalla Al Jumah, former CEO of Saudi Aramco, and requested support for Ssangyong before he headed to the Marafiq Desalination plant construction site in Jubail.

At a meeting with the workers there, Kim praised their hard work, asking them to do their best for the successful completion of the construction, test operation, and full-scale operation, as plant construction requires full attention until the very end.

He also forecasted that water-related businesses would form a big market as one of seven future industries. He citedSingapore’s operation of desalination facilities as an example.

Ssangyong E&C is constructing the world’s largest desalination plant that will produce some 800,000 tons of drinking water a day in Jubail, which is equivalent to the daily water consumption amount of a city with a population of 2.5 million. It must install 27 evaporators for the production of some 30,000 tons of water a day per evaporator in only 17 months, an unprecedentedly short period of time. Despite the tight schedule, Ssangyong workers in Jubail have been working against the clock towards the successful completion of the world’s largest plant - without a break for three months.

Kim then moved to Riyahd on June 30th to meet five executives with El Seif Engineering Contracting Company, a Riyahd-based large construction company in Saudi Arabia, including the vice-chairman Mohammed El-Seif. They discussed mutual cooperation for Ssanyong’s advance into the Saudi Arabian construction market. Kim was accompanied by Kwon Pil-Sang, a senior managing director of the Ssangyong plant business division, and Kwon Sun-Seong, the chief branch manager of Ssangyong in Saudi Arabia.
