Ssangyong Engineering chosen as preferred bidder for Ulsan Grand Bridge

2008-05-08

A consortium led by Ssangyong Engineering and Construction Co. was selected as a preferred bidder for a private investment project to build the “Ulsan Grand Bridge and Access-ways.” The project, initiated by the Ulsan city government, calls for a consortium to build bridges, a tunnel and motorways of either four or six lanes. The planned bridges include the 1.15-kilometer-long Ulsan Grand Bridge, which would be the world’s third-longest and the nation’s longest toll suspension bridge between Maeam-dong, Nam-district and Ilsan-dong, Dong-district in Ulsan, and a 1.82-kilometer-long bridge.

Total construction cost is set at some 290 billion won (US$278 million) and Ssangyong Engineering has an 11 percent stake or 32 billion won. Construction will start from January 2010 for 60 months. The period of privately-run operations is between January 2015 and December 2044. In the meantime, once the Ulsan Grand Bridge and access-ways are completed, it would significantly ease traffic congestion on motorways between Nam and Dong districts. The project is expected to bring residents in both districts some 3 trillion won in economic benefits over the next 30 years after the completion.
