Cost-cutting efforts take center-stage at event on construction technology

2008-03-18

Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co. held its annual construction technology event on March 18 with a focus on cost-savings, shortening construction schedules and improving quality.

At the ninth technology-sharing event, which was held at Seoul’s Olympic Parktel, a total of 115 cases of Ssangyong Engineering’s new construction technology were presented. Those cases were developed at Ssangyong Engineering’s domestic and overseas construction sites over the past year.

In particular, the number of cases related to cost-cutting efforts accounted for 34 percent of the total, or 39 cases. The figure, which compared with 15 percent a year ago, represented employees’ attention to a surge in prices of raw materials.

Among them, one case showed how the company turned the Rock Anchor technology, which demands excessive costs and materials in foundation work for an apartment, into the low-cost, highly-efficient Mat technology. Another case highlighted a technology which enables the company to take sewage out with valves and no structure in setting up drain pipes.

Of the total 115 cases, which were categorized by construction (38 cases), civil engineering (55 cases) and plant (22 cases), 24 cases were listed in the final contest and received awards from the company.

“The jury board assessed the cases in terms of quality improvement, cost-cutting measures, reduction of construction period and safety and other technology,” said a company official. “This year, it’s extraordinary that the number of cases related to cost-cutting efforts rose sharply. By sharing the new technology cases among employees, it is expected to help the company save costs.”

A total of 572 cases have been presented at the annual event since the year 2000. Of them, one technology was designated as a new construction technology. With those cases, Ssangyong Engineering won 13 patents, with two patents on new devices.
