Ssangyong E&C(Chairman & CEO Kim S.Jun)won a super-size hotel project in Singapore, which will be the largest architectural project in the history.

With 2,561 guestrooms in three 57-story(with SkyPark) buildings, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel project comes to $686 million (= 630 billion won).

It is part of the Marina Bay Sands IR, an ambitious project the Singaporean government is pushing ahead with in an effort to join “the Upper Half of the First World.”

The Marina Bay Sands IR aims to be the world’s best multi-purpose resort comprised of the hotel, a convention center that can accommodates 54,000 people, an event square with the capacity of 10,000 people, two 2,000-seat cinemas, a casino, an art history museum and a shopping center. The entire project is scheduled for completion by December 2009 at a reclaimed land lot near the Central Business District with an investment of $3.5 billion.

It is expected that the resort will bring about the effect of a 1~1.5 percent increase in GDP through creation of billions of dollars’ profit every year, along with the ongoing project for Multi-Purpose Resort in Sentosa Island.

The Pre-Qualification process was participated in by three Korean construction firms, including Ssangyong E&C, Japanese firms (i.e. Shimizu, Obayashi, Kajima, Takenaka, Penta Ocean, Nakano), Dragages of France and Gammon of Hong Kong. Only four of them, i.e. Ssangyong E&C, Shimizu, Dragages and Gammon were selected for the main bidding.

In the final competition, Gammon seemed to be in the most advantageous position. Ssangyong E&C was finally selected as the successful bidder, although it did not present the lowest price.

Commenting on the bidding, a Las Vegas Sands official said that Ssangyong was finally selected chiefly due to the Company’s earnestness shown over the one-year bidding period, its past performance results in the sector of high-end buildings in many parts of the world, its technological capability checked in Korea and Chairman Kim Suk-jun’s firm commitment to the project.

The hotel, comprised of three 57-story (with SkyPark) buildings, has total floor space of 202,171㎡, i.e. twice that of 63 Building in Seoul.

12,000㎡-sized skyparks will be built that will link the 200m-high top floors of the three buildings as a space from which people can enjoy the view of the beach and the entire city state. A garden, a walk, restaurants, a spa, a swimming pool and a lookout will be accommodated.

Landmark hotel buildings built by Ssangyong E&C include: The Raffles City Complex in Singapore, which includes 73-story Swissotel The Stamford Hotel listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest hotel in the world, and the 305m high Emirates Hotel and the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which are two of the three leading hotels in Dubai. The Company has built a total of more than 12,000 hotel guestrooms, ranking the second in the world as a contractor in this area. It has won a total of $6.3 billion worth of projects outside of Korea.
