2006-12-07

Buildings for the Korean National University of Arts (the worksite chief: General manager Jang Deok-Bae) were picked as the winner of the overall grand prize, or the Construction and Transportation Minister’s Award, in the building category of “the Second Korea Civil Engineering and Construction Awards.” The prize was awarded to President Kim Byung-Ho at a ceremony held at the main hall in Maekyung Media Center in Chungmu-ro on December 7, 2006.

The ceremony included opening remarks and critiques by the chief judge, which were followed by welcoming remarks by President Chang Dae-Hwan of the Maeil Business Newspaper and congratulatory remarks by Construction and Transportation Minister Lee Yong-Sup. The awarding of prizes concluded the event, which was also attended by President Kim Byung-Ho and Senior Vice President Moon Bo-Hyun of SsangYong E&C, as well as Hong Jong-Woo, General Manager in charge of technology development in the Company.

The award is jointly presented by the Maeil Business Newspaper, MBN TV, the Architectural Institute of Korea, and the Korean Society of Civil Engineering, and is supported by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. It is awarded to construction professionals who have made significant contributions to the development of the construction industry though advanced technology and innovative ideas. The winners are picked after assessing overall records of their work in the areas of technological levels, urban functions, environmentalfriendliness, architectural plan and design, and value as landmarks through a process of strict appraisal encompassing the evaluation of documents, and an onsite inspection by a panel of judges, who include experts such as university professors.

Buildings for the Korean National University of Arts, which clinched the top prize, consist of a library, a theater, and a lecture hall. These buildings have a combined floor space of 17,000 pyeong (57,000 sq. meters) built on a 13,000-pyeong (43,000 sq. meters) property at San 1-5, Seokgwan-dong, Seongbuk-gu in Seoul.

The buildings were recognized for distinguished exterior design in harmony with the university’s image as the nation’s top art school, and for space layout ideal for various functions and characteristics of creative work by students.

In particular, the exposed concrete finish method, in which the buildings’ concrete surface remaining after the completion of casting work constitutes the exterior finish as it is (without the use of extra finish materials) highlights the artistic nature of the university, as the method effectively generates a natural feel and beauty.

The library, housing key facilities for academic administration, was constructed incorporating spaces in unique styles including a sunken plaza, a ground floor plaza, and an upper deck, which further increase the value of the building. In order to harmonize the building with exposed concrete finish and to induce a varying sense of feel, split faced blocks, aluminum, rubber and Western red cedar wood were used as finishing materials.

The 518-seat pilot theater in the theater building, which has a stage that transforms into 13 different forms, allows opera performances, while the 323-seat Korean traditional music theater features a special acoustic design that makes it suitable for live performances. The lecture hall housing small and large spaces including studios, exercise rooms, play material storages, faculty rooms, research rooms and lecture halls, is designed to pursue pragmatism and artistic value at once through mildly curved roof lines, and offers optimum space allocation through, among other measures, the separation of the faculty area and the exercise arena.

Meanwhile, during the dedication ceremony held on November 23, 2006, the worksite chief Jang Deok-Bae, General Manager Kim Han-Jong and Deputy General Managers Lee Kyung-Hee and Kim Jin-Woo were awarded the Culture and Tourism Minister’s Award for their contribution to the cultivation of art human resources through successful completion of the buildings. In addition, manager Choi Joon-Ik won the Korea National University of Arts President’s Award.
