Sculpture commemorating former President Suk Won Kim of Ssangyong Group, for his role in construction of Korea’s first ski resort in 1973, is unveiled in front of the Pyeongchang Stadium

With the 2018 Winter Olympics mere weeks away, a sculpture honoring the achievements of Suk Won Kim (73), former Chairman of Ssangyong Group, was unveiled in front of the Pyeongchang Stadium to celebrate his role in the beginning of Korea’s modern winter sport.

The sculpture was created by the residents of Pyeongchang to honor Kim, who laid the cornerstone for the bid for the Winter Olympics. In 1973, Kim established in Pyeongchang the Yongpyong Ski Resort, a first of its kind in Korea. The Yongpyong Ski Resort will be used as a venue for alpine ski competitions during the Winter Olympics. Jung Gil Lee (56), a co-representative of the sculpture committee, said, "without the construction of the ski resorta risky, almost adventure-like ventureby Mr. Kim 45 years ago, none of us could have dare dreamed of hosting the Winter Olympic games. In order to honor his pioneering spirit, we’ve all agreed to create this sculpture.”

The name of the sculpture is 'Dream of Daegwalnyeong'. At the time of the resort’s construction, Mr. Kim made a sketchbook to hash out a plan for development of a comprehensive tourism town in Pyeongchang and Hoenggye area. This image became the inspiration for the sculpture. The former chairman said, "when I built the Yongpyong ski resort in the 1970s, everyone thought I was insane. But I had faith in my dream that the ski industry would grow and didn’t give up." He added, "it is a great pleasure and honor to be recognized as someone who laid the foundation for the Winter Olympics, something that is thought of as the event only hosted by the richest of nations.”
