Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd Wins Top Civil Engineering Structure Prize at 12th Civil Engineering Day

2009-03-30

Express Bus Terminal 923 Station, located along Seoul’s Subway Line 9 and built by Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd (directing site manager Kim Woo-sang), won the grand prize at “the Civil Engineering Structure of the Year Awards” during the 12th Civil Engineering Day hosted by the Korean Society of Civil Engineers on March 30, with the project assessed as being the best civil engineering facility completed in 2008.

An award ceremony held at the Construction Association of Korea building was attended by more than 300 people from the construction industry, including Chung Jong-hwan, Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs; Pyon Jong-keun, chairman of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers; and Kim Jong-ho, head of the civil engineering business at Ssangyong. Ssangyong won the honor after it was recognized for immaculately constructing a large, arch-shaped structure while allowing the vicinity’s underground store and Seoul Subway Line 3 to maintain operations by applying TRcM and CAM methods simultaneously for the first time in the world at Expressway Bus Terminal 923 Station along Seoul’s Subway Line 9.

The project was highly challenging since the site encompass an express bus terminal, a department store, and a hotel operating at the ground level, with an aged underground shopping mall and the 25-year-old Subway Line 3 located only 15 cm above the project site. The project drew keen attention from tunnel engineering experts around the world and a flurry of high profile figures visiting the site during the construction period. On the same date as the 12th Civil Engineering Day, the project was the only one of Line 9’s 25 subway stations to receive the “Beautiful Station” award from the Seoul Metropolitan Infrastructure Headquarters.
