2008-07-25

A consortium led by Ssangyong Engineering and Construction Co. was chosen on July 25 as a preferred bidder to build various facilities at a planned lakeside park, named the “Gwanggyo Power Center” in the city of Gwanggyo, south of Seoul.

The contract, placed by Gyeonggi Urban City Development Corp., calls for a winner to build 297,000-square-meters of residential buildings, or some 1,400 homes, a 82,500-square-meter of office buildings and 330,000-square-meters of commercial buildings at the site where a new city will be housed. To win the bid, Ssangyong Engineering formed a consortium with Lotte Engineering and Construction Co. and Doosan Engineering and Construction Co. by hiring the Korea Development Bank and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. as lead manager.

The project will cost a total of 1.2 trillion won (US$1.06 billion) and Ssangyong Engineering holds an eight percent stake in the consortium, or some 90 billion won. Construction will start from May 2010 and last until April 2014. Designed by Winy Maas, the globally famous Dutch architect, the Gwanggyo Power Center will feature the external appearance of the modern Bongsudae walls in the city of Hwaseong, Gyeonggi province. When various cultural facilities such as the Ghana Art Center and the Sungkok Art Museum and Art Center are housed at the site, it is expected to become a cultural landmark in southern Gyeonggi province.
