Ssangyong Engineering chosen preferred bidder for ‘floating islands’ on Han River

2008-04-04

A consortium led by Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co. was named as a preferred bidder on April 4 to build “floating islands” on the Han River.

The order, placed by Seoul Metropolitan City, calls for a consortium to build three artificial islands sized 9,209 square meters on the river as well as bridges (786 square meters) and other facilities.

The order’s value was 56.6 billion won and Ssangyong Engineering has stake of 15 percent of the consortium, or 8.5 billion won. Construction will take from June 2008 to September 2009. If selected, the consortium will manage the “floating islands” from October 2009 to September 2028.

The “floating islands” on the Han River is an eco-friendly culture and leisure facility which will be open during all four seasons. The first island will focus on performance (perhaps specify what type of performance to differentiate it from the second entertainment island) and the second will be a site for entertainment. The third island will become a center for water sports. Those islands are expected to become world’s famous tourist destinations because they will feature LED technology for night-time illumination.
