Order for overseas plant

2008-03-06

Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co. won an exclusive order worth 53.9 billion won (US$54 million) on March 6 to build parts of machinery and electricity for a water desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

The order was placed by SIDEM, the French builder which is building the Marafiq water desalination plant. The order calls for Ssangyong Engineering to build 8,890-meter-long pipes, 5,000-ton steel structures and 750,000-meter-long electricity cables at the 157,336-square-meter site. The construction will take 18 months.

In particular, this was Ssangyong Engineering’s first overseas order and it is expected to positively affect the company’s future deals overseas, as Ssangyong Engineering also won a contract of 7.9 billion won to supply thermostats and heat-compression devices.

Saudi Arabia is building the Marafiq water desalination plant under the country’s mid- and long-term plans to expand its power and desalination plants. The Marafiq plant will be completed by 2010, with daily production capacity of 800,000 cubic meters. The water will be sold by Saudi Arabia’s state-run power and desalination company Marafiq.
