Ssangyong E&C will do remodeling work for the Namsan Tower Hotel

The Namsan Tower Hotel, which was opened in 1969, will be transformed into a six-star hotel. Ssangyong E&C(Chairman Kim Suk-jun)announced that it recently won the remodeling work of the landmark building designed by the late Kim Soo-geun, a famed Korean architect, to change it into a world-class luxury resort with a new name - The Seoul Banyan Tree Club & Hotel. The work is the first of its kind attempted in Korea, changing into a six-star hotel through remodeling. The project amount comes to 70 billion won. The new hotel will be opened in early 2009 after commencement of the work in early 2008.

The Banyan Tree Club & Hotel is a world-famous resort franchise operating 21 resorts and hotels, 58 spas and 69 galleries in 32 cities around the world, including London, Morocco, Greece, Egypt, Cape Town, Sydney, Hong Kong, Pucket and Bintan .

In 2007, it was selected as the best hotel chain by travel journalists and the No.1 resort favored by world-famous personalities. Banyan Tree Spa, which features the use of outlandish herbs, massage therapy, facials, body scrubs and hair treatments, has become a world-famous brand.

To meet the requirement of the world-famous chain, the guestrooms will be made not smaller than 60㎡ and the number of guestrooms will be decreased from 218 to 59 through the remodeling work. The new hotel will have Banyan Tree Spa and Kids’ Club in addition to the existing swimming pool.

The overall project will be implemented by Urban Oasis, while the hotel operation will be taken care of by the Banyan Tree Club. Lehman Brothers and Shinhan Bank of Korea will take part in the project financing. The world-famous golf management company Troon Golf will take responsibility for operating the club.

Commenting on the project a Ssangyong E&C official said, “The Company’s technological prowess in remodeling will be recognized through this work of transforming an existing building into a world-class hotel. The Seoul Banyan Tree Club & Hotel will be reborn as a leading tourist attraction and landmark building in Seoul.”

Landmark hotel buildings built by Ssangyong E&C include: The Raffles City Complex in Singapore, which includes the 73-story Swissotel, The Stamford Hotel listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest hotel in the world, and the 305m high Emirates Hotel and the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which are two of the three leading hotels in Dubai. The Company has built a total of more than 12,000 hotel guestrooms, ranking second in the world as a contractor in this area.

In addition to building the Raffles Hotel, a leading hotel in Singapore, Ssangyong E&C carried out the remodeling work for the Capital Square Office Building Parcel-E, for which it won the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore) Award, Louis Vuitton New Concept Store, Korea, the largest Louis Vuitton outlet in Asia, the Hilton Hotel Seoul, Sophitel Ambassador and Gungeon Apartment Complex in Bangbae-dong, Seoul.
