Yearly Visits to Overseas Sites
Five Visits Already Made This Year
[Min Kyu Park, The Asia Economy Daily] Chairman & CEO S. Joon Kim Ssangyong E&C recently visited Africa Equatorial Guinea last month. At the end of last year, he visited four construction sites, including a 30 billion KRW construction project from Equatorial Guinea, to encourage employees and staff. Chairman & CEO Kim&rsquos busy itinerary this year includes visits to five sites including Equatorial Guinea, Dubai, Singapore, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
Since his inauguration in 1983 as CEO of Ssangyong E&C, Mr. Kim has traveled to overseas sites to commend the selfless devotion and work ethic of the firm employees and staffa telltale sign of his intense focus in overseas business. In 2009, Chairman & CEO Kim undertook a grand odyssey of 29 hours of air travel and 12 hours of land travel to visit sites in India and Pakistan.
This is a reflection of his business philosophy of &ldquoconducting business on the road. Ssangyong E&C&rsquos great success in overseas markets owes a great deal in Chairman & CEO Kim policy. Since his inauguration as President & CEO of Ssangyong E&C in 1983, Kim has been traveling to overseas sites every year in order to take care of the firm&rsquos overseas employees.
In particular, Chairman & CEO Kim is famous for closely managing overseas projects from bidding to implementation, regardless of their size, in order to demonstrate his will as a CEO. He served as a chair of the Korea-Singapore Economic Cooperation Council for more than 10 years and maintains a robust business network in Southeast Asia.
Thus, Ssangyong E&C reputation as an international construction empire can be traced back to Chairman & CEO Kim. Ssangyong E&C received 150 projects (about 10.2 billion USD) from more than 20 countries around the world, including ASEAN countries, the US, Japan and Africa.
Chairman & CEO Kim is an unusual figure in not only the construction world but in the greater business community due to his long tenure. Actually, Chairman & CEO Kim shared successes and challenges with Ssangyong E&C throughout its history of 40 years. Since his inauguration as the CEO of Ssangyong E&C in 1983, he has been a CEO for over 34 years. Chairman & CEO Kim maintained his position even during the dissolution of the Ssangyong Group and Ssangyong E&C workout (improvement of corporate financial structure) and court management (corporate rehabilitation process). While there were short periods of recess in his career in the firm, he continues to lead the firm even during the stressful period of transitioning from one majority shareholder to another.

Ssangyong E&C is accelerating overseas orders on the back of technological strength and stabilization of financial structure after welcoming the Investment Corporation of Duba (ICD) as the majority shareholder in 2015. What Mr. Kim emphasizes to its employees is strengthening competitiveness. He added, "The construction market is expanding its scope by combining new fields and discovering new possibilities as quickly as possible." &ldquoIn order to continue the business and generate high profits, it is necessary to expand the scope of both value engineering (VE) and technology development as well as domestic construction,&rdquo he added.
